Josh Beattie | What's That Sound? with Stu Watts Episode #36
Description
Stu Watts chats with Josh Beattie, who is an indie-pop songwriter and producer based on the Gold Coast. Known for blending the mainstream with the obscure in a colourful sonic fashion, he's worked with artists in Germany, the US, the UK, Taiwan, Kenya, and of course at home in Australia. Josh started his career as a sound editor composer for film & television- especially psychological thrillers- and ended up bringing these cinematic sensibilities as a core member of QMA-winning chill-pop outfit Standby Empire; eventually taking on production duties for Standby and a myriad of other exciting acts. Having helped artists create at Bignote Productions, Qsound Audio, and Hunting Ground Studios, Josh’s shift to full-time pop production saw the construction of his own studio in the hinterland of Mount Tamborine, where he’s worked as a songwriter, producer, mix engineer and multi-instrumentalist. Since then, Josh’s ties to Queensland music scene have taken him outside the studio too. Recently, he was a guest judge for the Listen Up Songwriting Prize, music supervised the Feature Film “Canvas”, and helped put together the very first Sounds Dangerous Festival in Burleigh Heads, whose guests included Saint Lane, Stingin’ Rogers, and Bootleg Rascal.
Topics discussed include:
- The steps taken to improve efficiency and implementing systems
- His unique and "chaotic" approach to production
- Why comparing yourself to others is problematic
- ...and more
